If nothing else, having to translate things into multiple languages keeps a number of translators employed…
It seems like technology will have to play a big part in the whole language and translation issue. Translation software (such as http://www.systransoft.com/) can help alleviate issues that arise from people’s strong feelings about their language and culture – by allowing countries to have all EU documents in their own language. But this would not remove issues related to speaking events and the languages used in these situations. In addition, this adds one more layer to the EU and possibly causes more problems. For example, an error by the software in relation to a legal term could cause problems. In the end, this adds more bureaucracy to the EU but it is necessary to for a multi-national organization.
